Tough call today. 20 years from tomorrow (10/10) was the release date for two albums I still enjoy; Green Day Insomniac and No Doubt Tragic Kingdom.

Gwen, oh Gwen, I miss the old Gwen. What an incredible album, and the lead track would never have been recorded if it weren’t for a compromise on Excuse me Mr. Yep, that’s right, No Doubt threatened to leave Spiderwebs off of Tragic Kingdom if the studio would not let them use the punk/ska style Excuse me Mr . instead of a more folk-influenced version preferred by the producer, Matthew Wilder. The folk version has never been released ad instead lives on in legend.

If you want the whole album (you do) it’s here:

Then we get to Insomniac. Released to middling reviews and criticized for not progressing much from their original sound, Green Day had a few hits on this album; Geek Stink Breath , Brain Stew/Jaded and a personal favorite Walking Contradiction . What’s not to love? It is comical to go back ad read reviews for albums that have lived on well past what the initial critiques believed they would. (Weezer - Pinkerton anyone? Rolling Stone had to apologize for that one 10 years later.) So if you want that whole album find it here:

Happy Friday. Crank it!

So which is it? Which album carries more water these days?

+1 No Doubt.

I saw No Doubt on their first major US tour with Bush back in ‘94 (ish?). That was a good show.

I think that tour was 1995 or 96. Sixteen Stone was released December of 1994 and that was the album they were touring on.

Brain Stew is one of the greatest tracks every created and Green Day over No Doubt all day long.

There are a few songs out there that I feel like no matter when that song was released, it would be a hit. I won’t say timeless, but maybe era-less. Brain Stew is in that mix. Santa Monica by Everclear is another on that list.

You could release those songs tomorrow and they would chart.

I agree on all accounts. I might add Toadies - Possum Kingdom to that list coming from a similar time.

I still kick myself sometimes for dismissing Bush, No Doubt, The Offspring, Green Day...hell, even Matchbox 20 and Hootie. I always liked Dave Matthews and generally still do. Pearl Jam, as well.

When I listen to all of them now, I’m amazed at how much better life seemed before everything went electro-pop and hip-pop. I’m just glad there are still artists out there doing real compositions, even if they’re drowned out by the Miley Cyruses of the world.

Yep, Rubberneck is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Blind Melon’s eponymous album is up there too. But my biggest draw was always to the Smashing Pumpkins.

These two albums were huge in my kidhood I do believe Tragic Kingdom inspired my brother to pickup the bass guitar(me the electric) and start his middle/ highschool band era.

Home PC’s and gaming were just getting interesting and we had these two awesome albums to score it all.

I can not for the life of me think of Tragic Kindom without Excuse me, which became my fav song.
